The
Ethiopian Orthodox Church was founded in Axum, in the 4th century
AD, and is a unique, autonomous and self-governing religious
institution. Ethiopian Orthodox Christians are Monophysites
and believe that Christ's humanity and divinity are inseparable.
They have their own saints, follow Old Testament dietary practices,
observe Saturday as the Sabbath, and believe that the Ark Of
The Covenant was brought to Axum, from the Temple in Jerusalem,
in the 1st Millennium BC, where it remains to this day. Although
it is forbidden to see the Ark, it is their most treasured icon
and every church contains a representation of it. |
