Stone
Town
The
exotic and fascinating island of Zanzibar is steeped in thousands
of years of history. It was once ruled by Omani Sultans who,
by the middle of the 19th century, were reaping immeasurable
wealth through a huge slave market and by establishing the island
as the world's largest producer of cloves. The old Stone Town
is a labyrinth of narrow winding streets, quaint shops, bustling
bazaars, friendly faces, extravagant palaces and beautiful period
buildings. The Islamic influence is still prevalent and the
muezzin's call to prayer can be heard five times a day from
the many mosques. |
