Life
On The Lakes
The
Rift Valley in Eastern Africa stretches for more than 3,000
kms, from the Danakil Depression in Ethiopia, to Lake Malawi
in South Eastern Africa. This huge scar on the earth's crust
was formed by tectonic and volcanic activity, which allowed
the formation of a number of vast freshwater inland lakes. These
lakes are of enormous importance to the local people and wildlife
as a source of water and food. The lakeshores can be a vivid
microcosm of African village life as the men repair their nets
and canoes, and the women and children swim, socialise, gather
water, and wash their pots, pans, clothes and themselves. |
